BUDDHIST REMAINS AT GUNTUPALLI
The remains of the ancient sangharam include a circular rock cut chamber imitating a thatched hut similar to those in Barabar hills near Gaya (Bihar) of Asokan times though slightly later in date. Two groups of rock cut chambers opening into common halls forming a large and small monastery (Vihara), the ruins of the brick built chaitya hall and many stupas of different sizes, mostly rock cut and a few structural are found at this ancient site. The facades of the rock cut viharas with their arched gables and imitation timber use recall similar one in western India of contemporary times. The entire group typifies a random development and extension during the centuries of its growth (2nd century to 3rd century A.D).
