Appeal

Dear Friend,

We are a group of young scholars pursuing research on Indian Art and culture. Dr. Lavanya Kondepudi was a very bright, promising and upcoming scholar friend of ours with a very wide range of research interests. Unfortunately she left us on 11th December (Friday), 1998. We, her friends would like to keep her memory alive. She has left behind many articles and unfinished research projects (please see the enclosed Bio-Data). She had a deep understanding of Russian literature and brilliantly defended her Doctoral thesis on "Humanistic pathos and forms of its expression in the Soviet novelette of 1970’s (Mainly covering V.Astafyev, V.Shukshin, C.Aitmatov ) in 1988 at the faculty of Philology of the Moscow State University, Moscow.

Gradually she moved towards the study of Indian art and culture. Rock Art, Buddhist art, Hindu Iconography, Ethnography etc. were some of the areas that she had recently started to explore. She revealed great sensitivity in understanding ancient and traditional art motifs and images. She explored and wrote about rock art sites of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Indus sites of Rajasthan and Gujarat. She also made an extensive study on Contribution of Andhra Desham to Buddhist Art.

We would like to bring out a commemorative volume of her writings and photographic documentation of Indian art and heritage done by her along with her a few friends. In that volume we plan to include articles contributed by her friends and like-minded people as well. We would highly appreciate if you could cooperate with us by sending a research article on art and architecture. We will also welcome articles related with Russian studies

To those friends, who knew Lavanya personally, we request to write memoirs, send in photographs etc. that we will use either for the volume or on the recently opened web site ( http://www.lavanya-indology.com ). If any friend has recorded voice of Lavanya, we would request to eiter send or inform us immedietely as we are franetically looking for her voice to put into this web site.

We would like to release the volume on 25th February, year 2000, her birthday. May we therefore request you to submit your contribution latest by August 1999.

We look forward to hearing from you.
